Overview

Framed antique Italian Catholic prayer card depicting the martyrdom of Saint Eurosia, a Christian princess traditionally said to have had her head cut off by Muslim/Moorish rulers in medieval Iberia after refusing both forced marriage and renunciation of Christianity. The image shows Eurosia kneeling in prayer as an executioner raises a curved blade above her head moments before her execution. Saint Eurosia later became associated with protection against storms, demonic forces, possession, and catastrophe. The reverse contains an officially approved Italian prayer printed with an Imprimatur dated 1927.

Acquired / Origin

Origin: Italy

Acquired in Rome, Italy — May 2026.

Likely dating from the 1920s to 1940s based on the 1927 ecclesiastical approval printed on the reverse.

Description

The front of the card depicts the legendary execution of Saint Eurosia, a Christian martyr said to have been killed after refusing marriage demands and refusing to renounce her faith. The scene captures the moment immediately before decapitation, a style of imagery commonly used in Catholic martyr devotional art to emphasize unwavering faith in the face of violence and death.

Saint Eurosia later became associated with protection against storms, lightning, demonic influence, possession, and destructive natural events. In parts of Italy and Spain, her relics and prayers were historically invoked during violent weather and agricultural crises.

The reverse contains an Italian prayer asking Saint Eurosia for strength to endure suffering, temptation, and hardship without abandoning faith. The prayer also emphasizes self denial, penitence, and spiritual endurance.

Cards like this were commonly carried in wallets, prayer books, bedside altars, or held during private devotional prayer and meditation.

The prayer card is mounted within a black 4x6in deep display frame with 1.5in depth.
