This is a Taoist protection cloth (Fu or Fulu 符籙) talisman received directly from a Ma Song while he was in active trance during the 9 Emperor God Festival/Phuket Vegetarian Festival in Phuket, Thailand.

Description:

The talisman is executed in red cinnabar style script on yellow cloth, a combination traditionally associated with Taoist authority, purification, and command.

It is not written in standard Chinese, but in Taoist fúlù talismanic script, where select characters act as semantic anchors and the rest are compressed ritual sigils encoding divine commands and authority rather than readable language.

The vertical inscription functions as a protective directive, calling on divine forces to suppress danger, disorder, and harmful influences. The faint square seal beneath the text acts as a talismanic stamp, reinforcing legitimacy and ritual force.

This piece was handed directly to us by a Ma Song while he was in trance, during the height of the Vegetarian Festival rituals. In that state, Ma Song are believed to be vessels for divine entities, and objects passed to devotees or witnesses are understood to carry the protective intent of the deity being channeled at that moment. That context is central to this object’s meaning and use.

Cloth talismans of this size are often retained after the festival and used for ongoing protection. Unlike paper fu that are burned or fixed temporarily, cloth versions are carried, worn, or displayed long term.
