Description

This mask comes from the Dan Guro forest zone of Upper West Africa, a region known for restrained carving and strict adherence to symbolic form. The most striking feature is the vertical stacking of almond-shaped eye slits on both sides of the face. These multiple eyes signify heightened perception, vigilance, and the ability to observe simultaneously across physical, spiritual, and social realms.

The proportions are tall and narrow, with a continuous raised ridge running from the crown down the nose. This ridge is a defining Dan Guro trait, reinforcing symmetry and visual focus. Facial elements are intentionally minimal: a tight mouth, shallow chin, and controlled geometry that avoids ornament in favor of clarity and authority.

The interior reveals clear hand-adzed hollowing marks rather than machine smoothing, indicating traditional carving methods. Eye tunnels align precisely from front to back, showing they were carved integrally with the form rather than added later. Small perforations at the sides were cut for fiber ties or strapping, consistent with structurally complete masks of this type.

Surface wear shows natural handling and light smoke exposure, with a darkened exterior contrasting against the lighter exposed wood of the eye openings. Interior oxidation and dryness are consistent with age and long-term environmental exposure. Overall, this mask retains strong regional integrity and symbolic coherence, reflecting a carver deeply familiar with Dan Guro visual language and ritual logic.
