Description
This mask is built around a carved wooden face supporting an elaborate superstructure and full costume. The face presents a dual human visage fused into an animalized form, creating intentional doubling. Paired eyes noses and mouths communicate heightened perception and layered judgment, signaling the right to see decide and act beyond ordinary human limits.
Curved horns rise from the upper face as markers of danger and authority. A seated human figure crowns the mask, representing elder or ancestral sanction. The hierarchy is clear and deliberate. Ancestral authority above. Human judgment at the face. Animal force expressed through scale presence and threat.
Pigment use follows Senufo power logic. Red is concentrated at joints and crown elements to mark vitality action and danger. Ochre is worked into the eyes and facial planes to reinforce vigilance and perception. Darkened surfaces reflect handling movement and exposure rather than decorative aging.
The raffia straw hair is a critical element of the mask’s function. It expands the silhouette amplifies motion and fully obscures the human body beneath. Raffia marks liminality placing the wearer between human and spirit. The fibers are bound directly into the hood seams creating a unified structure designed for endurance intimidation and presence.
The canvas hood shows hand stitching fraying and sweat darkening consistent with use. The back of the carved face shows hand adzed tool marks natural oxidation a narrow horizontal ventilation slit and evenly spaced lacing holes securing the hood directly to the mask.
This object represents sanctioned violence. Not personal aggression. Law made visible.
