Description
This package contains unconsecrated Catholic communion wafers manufactured for church liturgical use. In Catholic tradition the wafers become the Eucharist only after consecration during Mass, but prior to consecration they are produced by monasteries, convents, and in rarer cases prison labor cooperatives such as this one.
The cooperative describes work as one of the primary methods for rebuilding lives damaged by incarceration, making these wafers an unusual intersection of punishment, redemption, labor, and religious ritual culture.
The wafers themselves are made only from water and type “00” wheat flour according to traditional Catholic altar bread requirements. Their extremely minimal composition reflects strict Eucharistic production standards maintained by the Church.
