Overview

Small Italian devotional wall crucifix depicting the San Damiano Cross, the famous medieval crucifix associated with Saint Francis of Assisi and the founding of the Franciscan movement. According to tradition, Saint Francis prayed before this image in a ruined church when Christ spoke the words: “Francis, go and repair my church.” The cross became one of the most recognizable symbols in Franciscan Christianity.

Acquired / Origin

Origin: Italy

Acquired in Venice, Italy — May 2026.

Likely dating from the late 20th century. Produced as a small devotional or pilgrimage piece inspired by the original San Damiano Crucifix preserved in Assisi.

Description

The crucifix reproduces the distinctive Byzantine style imagery of the original San Damiano Cross. Unlike later Western crucifix depictions focused primarily on suffering and death, Christ is shown upright, alert, and triumphant. The surrounding figures include saints, witnesses to the crucifixion, and symbolic scenes connected to resurrection and ascension.

The original cross became central to Franciscan history after Saint Francis of Assisi reportedly heard Christ speak directly through it while praying in the abandoned church of San Damiano around the year 1205. That moment is traditionally viewed as the beginning of his spiritual mission and eventual reform movement.

Small reproductions like this were commonly purchased at monasteries, churches, pilgrimage sites, and religious markets throughout Italy for home altars, wall display, or personal devotion.
